EPA is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that acts as a metabolic precursor to important lipids (fats) known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins control critical processes such as inflammation, blood flow, and blood clot formation. EPA can be found in cold-water fatty fish and seafood. Although the American Heart Association promotes eating fish for better overall heart health, studies show that the EPA in fish oil supplements can help lower several important cardiovascular risk factors, including arterial calcification, high blood pressure, and elevated triglycerides. Preliminary animal research suggests that EPA helps prevent the buildup of calcium deposits in arteries. The accumulation of calcium can narrow arteries and reduce blood flow. Clinical studies show that a daily dose of EPA also decreases systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) as much as 8.7%. However, the biggest impact from EPA is its ability to lower triglycerides. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid essential for brain development during pregnancy and early childhood. It is also linked to improved heart health, better vision, and reduced inflammatory response. This long-chain fatty acid is found in cell membranes throughout the body and helps to transmit messages between nerves. DHA is naturally produced in small quantities by our bodies, but to achieve adequate amounts, DHA needs to be taken in through dietary sources such as cold-water fish, grass-fed meat, dairy products, or omega-3 enriched or pasture-raised eggs. It is also available as a supplement, such as fish oil. The brain is a fatty organ, and between 10% and 20% of its total fats are DHA. Of the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the brain, 90% are DHA, which is especially concentrated in the brain's gray matter. But research shows that DHA has anti-inflammatory properties and heart health benefits as well.
